My first marathon was a long time in the making. After getting in to running and successfully completing a half marathon, I switched to trail running. It's a completely different culture and full of people who see the 'impossible' as completely doable (we fondly call each other enablers). I was looking around me seeing these completely 'ordinary' people achieving amazing goals, and I began to wonder if I could to. I set myself the goal of running the Hubert marathon (sadly this event no longer runs - oops, a pun!) a course from Yanyanna Hut to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, including going up the outside track of St Mary's before the long, winding descent into the Pound.
In the lead up in 2017 I hurt myself not long before the event. I didn't understand about overtraining then (so clear to me now I was overtraining for my experience when I look back on my run data), and ended up with a grade 2 tear of my calf. I was devastated. I dedicated myself to rehab, using a physio and home exercises, and slowly got myself back running again, and then training for this marathon again. I went in with less training than I had wanted, but I'd learned it's better to be undertrained than overtrained. It was a gorgeous day, and still a run that brings my joy when I think of that accomplishment.
I love making amateur films, so here is my video recap of my first marathon.
I hope you enjoy,
Beck
