Heysen 105 (now 115) 2021

I came back for my third 100km! Like 2019, and unlike 2020, I was trained. I was ready for a great day. And the first 50km were absolutely fantastic. Pain set in from there, which got steadily worse, and downhill became torturous. That can happen in ultras though, and while unpleasant that was fine. The real problem was my over correct. After ending up in an ambulance after the 2019 due to ridiculously low blood pressure from dehydration, this time I became ill from over hydration! Too much fluid, and not enough electrolytes. The misery of the last 43kms can't be described. It was equivalent to childbirth (and yes, I'm talking no medication at all posterior baby childbirth). While I perked up at Inman Valley from some rest, it was too late. I have learned A LOT about hydration since, but at the my only choices were pull out or endure. You'll notice from Inman there is basicially no footage. Just: here's my face of misery, it's dark, there's an aid station, there's an aid station, finish. Lol. You'll hear me crying as I approach the finish not just out of relief, but because I could not believe that some friends had stayed up and waited for me.

The Heysen 105 is now 115km. It begins in Rocky Creek in Kuitpo Forest, going through Kyeema Conservation Park, Mount Magnificent Conservation Park, Finniss Conservation Park, Yulti Conservation Park, Myponga Conservation Park, to the Bluff, then around in to Victor Harbor.

Here is my video recap.

I hope you enjoy,

Beck
